What does SASI do

SASI’s goals and aims are achieved through a number of projects in the various programmatic areas:
Programme Area: Culture and Heritage Management
The objective of this programme is to support the San with research and management (control) of their cultural and natural heritage. In order for this objective to be achieved the following key areas of outputs /targets would need to be addressed:

1. The establishment of multi-media archives, community museums with adequate information about all aspects of the San in both Upington and the Kalahari.
2. Promotion of language development and mother-tongue education
3. The organisation of music and dance into a professional and sustainable art form
4. Oral history promotion and the development of materials

Programme Area: Community & Social Development
The objective of this programme are to empower the San communities to take responsibility for meeting their own socio-economic needs and aspirations through a range of projects which address educational, health, welfare, livelihoods and the political environments that have direct impact on these communities. In order for this objective to be achieved the following key areas of outputs /targets would need to be addressed:

1. The establishment of well functioning ECD structures in the community that will ensure that the San children receive pre-school education of a good quality.
2. The utilisation of multi-targeted approaches to ensure food security within communities.
3. The improvement of the physical and psychosocial health status of the communities
4. The improvement of communities’ understanding of political processes that impact on their development and to promote better consumer behaviour

Programme Area: Sustainable Livelihoods
The objective of this programme is to empower the San communities to take responsibility for meeting their own socio-economic needs and aspirations through a range of projects which address educational, health, welfare, livelihoods and the political environments that have direct impact on these communities. . In order for this objective to be achieved the following key areas of outputs /targets would need to be addressed:

1. The establishment of a tracking school that markets and promotes tracking as a formal profession
2. The development of a self sustainable cultural and eco-tourism enterprises, i.e. Uruke Bush camp Development and Footprints of the San.

3. The establishment of a resource and information centre in the Kalahari that would adequately provide for the needs of tourists, researchers and visitors.
4. The development and implementation of a sustainable arts and crafts ventures, i.e. N//aoh Djao, Sîsen and ‡Khomani Home & Textiles.
5. The establishment of sustainable small-scale farming ventures
6. The support of CPA’s to develop and implement sustainable land use strategies.


Programme Area: Leadership empowerment and capacity building
The objective of this programme area is to promote democratic, representative San leadership structures that have the necessary skills that will enable them to adequately fill their roles as leadership. In order for this objective to be achieved the following key areas of outputs /targets would need to be addressed:

1. Supporting the development of well functioning independent community governance structures, i.e. South African San Council-SASC, Communal Property Associations-CPA’s, Community Development Committees-CDC’s
2. The development of a youth & women cadre who will make a positive contribution towards the development of the San through the FRESH programme.
3. To respond to the request for support and inclusion from other San communities.
4. To support the involvement of San within national, regional and international initiatives that promote the rights of indigenous people.


Programme Area: SASI Institutional Capacity Building
The objective of this area is to foster and implement the principles of a learning organisation so as to continue to improve in service delivery and accountability to communities, partners and donors. Outputs in this area include:

1. Implementation of organisational fundraising strategy.
2. Annual review and planning processes.
3. Improvements to administrative systems, based on feedback from review and planning processes, so as to facilitate effective reporting to communities & donors.
4. The development of all Staff so as to improve service delivery.
5. Training of new Board members in Leadership and Governance.
6. Co-operation with other organisations on a provincial, national, regional and international level who share and identifies with the vision and ideals of SASI.

Programme Area: Legal Support Programme
The objective of this programme area is to provide strategic legal support to the San communities so as to ensure and secure rights for land development, language recognition and benefits from research and the use of cultural knowledge. In order for this objective to be achieved the following key areas of outputs /targets would need to be addressed:

1. Providing legal support to the community governance structures that will further development initiatives.
2. Provide legal support to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve CKGR coalition
3. Support to SASI, the Kuru Family of Organisations-KFO, WIMSA, Hoodia Trust and other San Organisations
4. Supporting the South African San Council-SASC in securing intellectual property rights
